A strong flood can easily destroy anything within its path, causing unimaginable pain and distress to humans that are affected by it. But it’s easy to forget that our animal friends are just as impacted by these natural disasters.
When the states of Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, and Mississippi were affected by over 23 inches of rain that caused historic flash flooding, two brothers in Hernando, Mississippi, took it upon themselves to save as many lives as they could. But unlike the local authorities, they weren’t bringing humans into their boat — they were helping animals.
Many animals, like this opossum, were desperate to find safety.

Frankie, who works for a landscaping company, and his brother, Joe, saw many animals on the pasture in front of their house, and knew they had to save them. So they set out with their boat into the woods.

Raccoons were able to find safety high up in the trees, but other animals like opossums and armadillos were stranded, holding on for dear life to whatever they could find to prevent themselves from floating away. Watching this daring rescue in action is pretty incredible!
At a time when most people would focus on their own personal safety, it’s amazing that Joe and Frankie thought beyond themselves and rescued so many animals. We only hope more people will follow their example!
